PortIA
PortIA: Responsible AI Adoption and AI Literacy for Digital Transformation in Mozambican Higher Education
The PortIA project promotes the digital transformation of Higher Education in Mozambique, with a structured pathway to replicate results across Portuguese-speaking African countries. The project addresses critical gaps in AI literacy, pedagogical innovation, and institutional readiness that currently limit the responsible adoption of Artificial Intelligence (AI) as a key technology to enhance teaching and learning processes as well as to widen its outreach. PortIA will build the capacity of academic staff, students, and institutional leaders through an AI literacy framework, training-of-trainers, and the integration of AI-related learning outcomes into selected curricula. In parallel, the project will support institutionalization by developing governance and policy tools for ethical and responsible AI use, including guidance on academic integrity, data protection, transparency, and inclusion. Through carefully monitored pilots in partner institutions, PortIA will test teacher-in-the-loop AI-enabled approaches such as OER, support for formative feedback, and virtual assistance for subject-specific queries, prioritizing pedagogical value, accessibility, and local relevance in Portuguese. Impact will be measured through indicators on staff competences, student learning experience, and institutional adoption, ensuring sustainability beyond the project lifetime and contributing to more inclusive, future-ready Higher Education systems.
