GENIAL: Generando capacidades para la EducacióN en la era de la Inteligencia Artificial en Latinoamérica y el Caribe

The project GENIAL (Generating capacities for education in the era of Artificial Intelligence in Latin America and the Caribbean) supports the creation of AI units within Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) in Guatemala, Ecuador, Colombia, and the Dominican Republic. These units aim to integrate AI ethically, modernize HEIs, ensure sustainability, and improve educational quality. GENIAL focuses on three pillars: (1) institutional modernization for AI and digitalization, (2) AI competency development for staff, educators, and students, and (3) ethical pedagogical innovation integrating AI into curricula. The project envisions HEIs as agile entities fostering AI literacy and preparing professionals for an AI-driven society. Recognizing regional challenges, GENIAL emphasizes the emerging vision for AI regulation and integration in Latin America. Collaboration between the EU and Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) is central, advancing AI governance, digital transformation, and culturally enriched AI education. Aligned with Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), GENIAL addresses skill gaps, drives digital transformation, and strengthens interregional partnerships in AI and regulation.

In this context, GENIAL has the following objectives:

– To generate a common framework for guidance on the pedagogical and ethical use of AI in higher education in LAC.

– To develop a replicable model of a specialized AI unit in LAC HEIs that can be adapted and adopted by other HEIs, as well as pedagogical, didactic and curricular strategies for the positioning of the institution in relation to the use of AI and the improvement of educational quality.

– To strengthen infrastructure and equipment of HEIs to integrate AI.

– To develop an AI competency framework for administrative staff, faculty and students through training modules and accreditations aligned with the needs of the institutions.

– To create the LAC interregional observatory and a collaborative network on the use of AI in education.
