MOCHILA
MOCHILA: MicrOCredentials in HIgher Education for Latin america and the cAribbean: Mexico, dOmenican republic, CHIle, and guatemaLA
The Higher Education (HE) system in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) is facing a rapidly changing labor market that requires the constant upskilling and reskilling of professionals, especially in the STEAM areas (science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics). However, traditional educational programs are too rigid to address this issue, and more flexible training solutions are needed. MOCHILA aims to establish capabilities for the design and issuance of digital micro-credentials in higher education institutions (HEIs) in LAC.
In this context, MOCHILA will carry out the following actions:
– Study of the context and regulations on micro-credentials in LAC.
– Development of a reference framework for the design and issuance of digital micro-credentials tailored to the context of LAC.
– Installation of 8 units focusing on the design and issuance of digital micro-credentials in 8 HEIs in Mexico, the Dominican Republic, Guatemala, and Chile.
– Training of academic and technical personnel at HEIs in LAC regarding the design and issuance of digital micro-credentials.
– Implementation of at least 8 pilot programs for the design and issuance of digital micro-credentials in three of the areas with the greatest need for upskilling and reskilling in LAC: engineering, health, and entrepreneurship.
– Creation of a Cooperation Network in LAC around micro-credentials.
MOCHILA is a cross-regional project (Regions 10 and 11) addressing “sustainable growth and jobs,” strengthening the connections between HEIs and the job market using micro-credentials as a tool. MOCHILA involves 2 European HEIs with complementary experiences in micro-credential design and the adoption of centralized and distributed solutions promoted by the European Union for the issuance of digital micro-credentials; these solutions need to be adapted to the reality of LAC. Additionally, MOCHILA collaborates with 8 HEIs in LAC of different sizes for the implementation of pilot programs. Over 2,000 professionals will benefit from the upskilling and reskilling achieved through MOCHILA.
